Lopez Family

The Lopez family is not just people who compete for just medal but also competes for their family. This family shows the passion of Tae Kwon Do that you could have or even have but not know it. The Lopez family consist of 4 of the world’s top martial artists today and I’m pretty sure until they stop competing or training there family legacy fire will still be burning strong. You have the coach and eldest brother Jean Lopez and then come the 3 trainees and Olympic medalists Steven Lopez, Diana Lopez and the youngest Mark Lopez. As you can see this sport is not only for one person for protection it is also a way for a family to bond.

Here a video of the Lopez Family. I hope you can see what great character and strength as a family they have all together.

History

This Post  is about the history and founder of the martial art tae kwon do.

General Choi Hong Hi was born on November 9th, 1918, in the Hwa Dae Myong Chun District of Korea. At the age of twelve he began to study Taek Kyon (this was the name of tae kwon do before it was changed), an ancient Korean method of fighting with the feet. He later went to do studies in japan and while he was there, he met a Karate teacher who helped him earn his first degree Black Belt in less than two years. He then intensified his training, striving to earn his second degree. Around the same time he started teaching.

Conscripted into the Japanese army during World War II, he was posted to Pyongyang where he was imprisoned. Wanting to maintain his good physical and mental health during his imprisonment, he practiced karate, alone at first, then by teaching it to the staff of the prison and the other prisoners.

Becoming an officer in the new Korean Army after the end of the war, he continued to teach his martial art to his soldiers as well as to American soldiers serving in Korea.

His beliefs and his vision of a different approach to teaching martial arts led General Choi to combine elements of Taek Kyon and Karate techniques to develop a modern martial art. He called it Tae Kwon Do, which means "the way of the feet and the hands", and this name was officially adopted on April 11th, 1955.

Tae Kwon Do

Definition of TaeKwonDo

"Tae" means "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art, or way. Hence TaeKwonDo (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching". Different schools and/or styles may impose different variations on the formal definition however. For example, some styles add the words "self defense" to the literal definition and/or throw in some form of the phrase "physical and mental training".

Tae Kwon Do is more than just a sport to me it’s been a part of my life from the very very  very young age of “set” that is the Korean word for saying 3. I was 3 years old when tae kwon do was introduced into my life. I have invested 20 years into this sport and I’m still continuing the practice of this sport (I’m currently holding a Second Degree Black Belt). It’s funny the reason my parents signed me up for tea kwon do was to keep me occupied and to learn discipline as a child because I was a very hyper active child, but as I grew older the sport became more interesting to me. As I grew in the sport I was very interested in to other martial arts, but the biggest influence besides my parents and family was by far the greatest ever martial artist and creator of his own style of martial art “Jeet Kune
Do”, Bruce Lee.
